Japan's Request for Gas, RI Focus Domestic Needs

Currently, the government will not increase the quota of gas to Japan,

Demand for the Japanese government for Indonesia to increase gas exports to Japan, in connection with the increasing energy needs post earthquake and tsunami will be discussed in bilateral Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA).

Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry and Trade, Eddy Putra Irrawaddy, says, for now the government is not going to increase the quota of gas to Japan with the main considerations relevant domestic supply.

In the State Budget (APBN) described the need to give priority to supply gas to the country.

"So there is no additional (gas to Japan) because the bound state budget mentioned that domestic gas demand should be added. So, if there are others, it violates the state budget," Eddy said in Bandung.

According to Eddy, until recently the Japanese do not know how much additional energy needs in the country because they still do the calculations. However, he explained, could only Indonesia has increased its quota of gas to Japan when there is a political decision.

"She (Japan) have to wait, or do not want to give the state budget," he said.

Previously, the Indonesian government, according to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Darwin Zahedy Saleh, is considering to help the energy supply gas to the Land of the Rising Sun.

"Regarding the gas export option for Japan is being discussed," said the end of March.

Because of Indonesia, he added, Japan is a partner in economic terms as well as history. "We consider Japan an important country, as have relations with Indonesia," said Darwin.

Meanwhile, Director General of Oil and Gas, Evita H Legowo, said the government will prioritize the supply of gas for domestic purposes. However, it also is calculating how large portion of natural gas that can be exported to Japan, if possible.

"His decision was discussed with BP Migas, due to its own domestic, we do not have adequate infrastructure," he said, recently.
